My First Impressions of South India

Updated: Apr 14, 2024

I can't believe I've already spent a month immersed in the streets of Chennai since my early February arrival. Below I share my initial thoughts on the city's culture, atmosphere, and inhabitants.

1. There's a lot of greenery & shade

During a typical week in February, temperatures soar into the 90s.

It's hot in Chennai. Like REALLY hot.

On most days, the temperatures are in the high 80s and low 90s. Lately, they've been in the low 90s to 95, and this is only the beginning of summer🥵.

The tropical climate was one of the big things I was worried about moving to India, and while the humidity leaves you feeling persistently sticky, the heat feels tolerable in some sense that there are a lot of greenery and trees that provide much needed shade for all of us.

2. Chennai Road Rules (or lack thereof)

Traffic in India has a bad rep. As one colleague described it, driving in this city is 'organized chaos.' The roads, devoid of defined lanes in many instances, often have vehicles approaching from all angles while getting to your destination. Amidst the constant honking and fluidity of traffic, there exists a unique blend of hyper-vigilance, mutual trust among drivers, and remarkable patience that seemingly minimizes accidents.

3. The sun signifies every new day☀️

Every morning as I get ready for work, I'm gifted with a stunning sunrise view from my bedroom window. The daily ritual of witnessing the sun's ascent over the horizon serves as a gentle reminder of the beauty and promise that each new day holds.

4. Be careful where you step

The roads here are in ROUGH condition - with scattered rebars, wires, bricks, and fragmented stonework posing hazards at every step. The jumble of debris makes navigating these paths a risky endeavor, and I often feel that I can't multitask while walking lest I trip on something while distracted.

5. Flower power

In Chennai, you can't escape the vibrant charm of the flowers. Everywhere you look, there's this explosion of colors and shapes that just blows your mind! Seriously, I've never seen anything like it anywhere else in the world.

6. Fruit trees are all around

Did you know that figs grow on trees? I sure didn't. Walking around in Chennai, I've been able to spot coconut trees, mango trees, fig trees, pomegranate shrubs, and more!
