Summer is upon us! As temperatures soar to 95°F and above, seeking respite from the heat becomes a necessity in Chennai. Chennai boasts India's longest beach, Marina Beach, which stretches along the Bay of Bengal, but it isn't the cleanest water to swim in. Instead, to escape the scorching sun, locals often flock to more southern shores for a refreshing swim or some exhilarating surfing.
On one particularly sticky Saturday, I ventured on a day trip an hour away from the city to explore Kovalam Rock Beach. Nearby, surf enthusiasts can also explore options like Murthy's surf school, which offers surfing lessons, accommodations, and meals, making it a perfect destination for both beginners and seasoned surfers alike.
Kovalam Rock Beach is a welcome reprieve from the city's hustle and bustle and quite the hidden gem. I found myself content to simply sit in the shade, observing others and basking in the natural beauty of Tamil Nadu's coastline.
